The Panel

The 2025 event featured a small community panel that brought together local historians, clergy, and longtime residents. Each person approached the legend from a different angle. Some focused on the documented visits of George Whitefield. Others traced how the story shifted each time it was written down. A few spoke from memory about when they first heard the tale as kids growing up near Meeting House Green.

The goal of the panel was not agreement. The goal was curiosity. People asked hard questions about folklore, faith, and how a single mark in granite turned into nearly two centuries of storytelling. The conversation made it clear that the footprint is more than a curiosity. It is a living piece of Ipswich culture.

The Reenactment

The 2025 reenactment was led by Katherine DeSilva, Member in Discernment with the United Church of Christ, a seminarian at Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa, OK, and a member of First Church in Ipswich, UCC. She guided the crowd through a simple retelling of the earliest printed versions, moving from Town Hill toward Meeting House Green. The reenactment blended local history with the shifting folklore that surrounded Whitefield's 1740 visit. People followed along, listened, and added their own memories. The moment worked because it honored both the legend and the town that kept the story alive.
